Many of us make memories when visiting a small business in a downtown setting. There is something special about shopping at a local store where the owners greet you by name, swap stories with you and ask you how your family is doing. Residents will undoubtedly experience this type of friendly atmosphere when shopping in communities throughout Wyoming. This holiday season, the team at Wyoming Economic Development Association would like to thank all of the small businesses in our state for the positive impact they have on our lives – during the holidays and all year long!

The importance of recognizing local businesses this holiday season

Shopping small in Wyoming positively impacts our local economy and the U.S. economy. In the last 25 years, small businesses have created over 60% of new jobs, just one of the many important reasons to direct holiday spending toward small businesses.

In Nov. 2021, American Express reported that a 2021 study found consumers shopping small during the holidays could likely contribute approximately $695B to the national small business economy. According to the study, 78%t of small businesses noted 2021 holiday sales would keep their business up and running in 2022.

Holiday discounts and promotions in Wyoming

Local businesses tend to offer specials and discounts this time of year to add some excitement to holiday shopping. Some shops will even have extended hours during the holidays.

“Economic developers can support local businesses by spreading the word about their holiday deals and specials,” said Sara DiRienzo, WEDA executive director. “Consider sharing their information with your social media following or featuring businesses on your website.’

Some communities hold events during the holiday season. See below a list of potential holiday events you can promote to show your support for small businesses in your community:

  • Holiday pop-ups

How to support Wyoming businesses

As a consumer, shopping small can be as easy as grabbing a cup of coffee from a nearby cafe in your hometown, or you can go the extra mile and give these independent retailers a satisfactory review online.

“Once again, the way economic developers can help is to share their information on social media and highlight their businesses on your website. The more times people see a message – the more impactful it can be,” DiRienzo said. “Whether you are getting a bite to eat at a family-owned restaurant, or spreading the word online about a mom-and-pop shop, you are helping to support small businesses and build the national and local economies.”

Small businesses bring character to Wyoming, generate new jobs, strengthen the economy and make for unique little adventures with friends and family. Join us in supporting and promoting local independent retailers this holiday season!
