Shurie Scheel is a business owner, nonprofit leader, and rural economic development advocate from Thermopolis. A Thermopolis native, she attended the University of Wyoming before returning home in 2009 with her husband, Phillip, to purchase her family’s small business. Together, they have grown Tumbleweed Propane into a successful regional company, where Shurie serves as Chief Financial Officer.
Shurie is the founding president of both Thrive Thermopolis, a local economic development organization, and the Learning Center of Hot Springs County, which provides educational, workforce, and support services for youth and adults. Her community development work has included housing, childcare, downtown revitalization, business support, tourism, workforce development, and long-term planning. She has extensive experience building partnerships, managing grants, developing programs, and moving community projects from ideas into action.
She also serves with the Big Horn Basin Nature and Discovery Center, Wyoming Discovery Days, Hot Springs Health Foundation, and other community initiatives. Shurie was named Hot Springs County Citizen of the Year in 2012 and Volunteer of the Year in 2018. A longtime Rotarian, Shurie served as Rotary District 5440 Governor in 2021–2022 and has held leadership roles at the club, district, and zone levels. Through Rotary, she has helped manage grant-funded clean water projects in rural Kenya.
Shurie is honored to serve on the WEDA Board and looks forward to representing rural communities and collaborating with economic development professionals across Wyoming.
